The original tribes of Orissa were comprised of the tribal groups namely Gonds and Buiyas. The origin of this state can date back during the medieval period when the state was ruled by various kings like Odra, Kalinga and Utkal. During the reign of such rulers the territory of Orissa was far different from the present status of the state. The political history of Orissa started with the rule of emperor Nanda of Magadha. But later on he was defeated by the great ruler Chandragupta Maurya but in spite of his victory his territory did not included Kalinga which was later occupied by the great ruler Ashoka which brought about a revolutionary change in his mind and as a result of which it turned the course of Buddhism religion in a major way. The state witnessed massive changes during the second century A.D. especially under the rule of Kharavela. Then it was followed by the rule of successive ruler namely Gupta empire, Bhaumakara dynasty, and as a result it was undertaken by the sultanate rule. Soon after the death of the great Mughal emperor Aurangzeb the throne was taken over by the Nawab of Bengal but he soon surrendered to the Marathas and their rule continued till 1803 but later in 1949 the state owed its existence properly.
